Celebrating Wales Tourism Ambassador Week: My Journey Through North Wales

This week marks Wales Tourism Ambassador Week (17–23 November 2025) – a celebration of the people who dedicate their time and passion to promoting Wales’ heritage, landscapes, and communities. There’s never been a better time to explore the programme and become part of this inspiring network.

North Wales isn’t just where I live – it’s where my heart is. From the towering peaks of Eryri, to the sweeping coastlines of Anglesey, to the medieval charisma of Conwy and the cultural depth of Gwynedd, this region has a way of capturing the spirit and imagination of everyone who experiences it. And yes, even someone who grew up here can still discover surprises around every corner!

Even Rheinallt — who did grow up here — will admit that the Ambassador courses have taught him a few things he didn’t know! Proof that North Wales always has more stories to tell.

Why I Became a Wales Tourism Ambassador

I’m proud to say I’ve completed the Conwy, Eryri, Gwynedd, Anglesey, and Cultural Ambassador courses, achieving Gold Level in each.

(I like to think of it as my Gold medal for loving North Wales — no athletic training required.)

For those of us lucky enough to call North Wales home, the landscapes, heritage, and communities help shape who we are. For anyone wishing to deepen that connection or share it with others, the Wales Tourism Ambassador Programme offers a meaningful way to do exactly that.

What Is the Wales (and North Wales) Ambassador Scheme?

The Wales Ambassador Scheme is a free online learning programme designed to help locals, tourism professionals, and visitors gain a richer understanding of Wales — its history, environment, culture, and tourism offer.

Here in North Wales, counties such as Conwy, Gwynedd, and Anglesey offer their own tailored modules that celebrate the region’s unique identity. Through short, engaging online lessons, Ambassadors progress through Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels while uncovering the deeper stories behind the landscapes, traditions, and communities that make Wales so special.

And don’t worry — there’s no pop quiz on the names of every Welsh dragon… yet.

What the Programme Has Given Me

For me, this programme has been a journey filled with:

  • Deeper knowledge of our region’s natural and cultural heritage
  • A better understanding of sustainable tourism
  • A broader appreciation of our Welsh language and traditions
  • Improved confidence in supporting and guiding visitors
  • A sense of belonging to a wider Wales-wide community

These modules weren’t just educational — they were grounding, inspiring, and genuinely enjoyable. And let’s be honest, realising there’s more to your own backyard than you thought? Yes… it is a bit thrilling.

Bringing North Wales to Life for Visitors

While I continue my learning journey, Rheinallt, born and raised in North Wales, shares the magic of the region through personalised tours. Even he has found there are things on the Wales Tourism Ambassador courses that are new to him! His deep-rooted knowledge complements the understanding I’ve gained through the Ambassador Programme.

Together, we’re passionate about helping visitors discover the real North Wales — its hidden gems, its histories, its legends, and the respectful ways to experience its wild and beautiful spaces.

Why You Should Consider the Ambassador Programme

The Wales Tourism Ambassador Programme isn’t just for guides — it’s for anyone who wants to feel more connected to Wales.

It’s perfect for:

  • Local residents
  • Business owners
  • Tourism and hospitality staff
  • Volunteers
  • Students
  • Anyone passionate about Welsh culture, heritage, and landscapes

Each module takes around 10–20 minutes, and you can complete them at your own pace. You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of the region, a new sense of pride, and certificates that reflect your commitment.

A Perfect Week to Begin Your Own Journey

As we celebrate Wales Tourism Ambassador Week, it’s the ideal opportunity to start your own journey. Whether you live here, work here, or simply love North Wales, joining the programme allows you to:

  • Discover hidden gems
  • Share authentic experiences with visitors
  • Support sustainable and responsible tourism
  • Gain recognition for your knowledge and commitment

There’s no better time to join the Ambassador community and show your love for Wales. And who knows — you might even learn something that surprises a local!

A Community Built on Passion and Place

Becoming an Ambassador means joining a growing network of people who care about celebrating North Wales responsibly and authentically. It’s about helping visitors build meaningful memories while protecting what makes our region so remarkable.

North Wales deserves to be understood — not just visited.
It deserves storytelling — not just sightseeing.
And it deserves ambassadors who love it deeply.

I’m honoured to be one of them.

And as for me?
There are now so many places I want to visit… I’m not entirely sure when I’m going to fit them all in! 😉
But that’s the magic of North Wales: every time you think you know it, it reveals something new.

If you’re local, a visitor, or part of the tourism community, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring the Wales Tourism Ambassador Programme. It’s an opportunity for personal growth, professional development, and a stronger connection to the place we all care about.
