Yesterday found ourselves in one of the most uncomfortable situations known to hospitality owners…
A room full of people. A civic ceremony. And photographs. Lots of photographs. 📸😬
We were invited to Llandudno Town Hall, where the Mayor presented us with a certificate recognising our achievement of being named among the UK’s Top 10 Guest Houses and receiving TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Award, placing us in the top 1% of hospitality businesses worldwide.
Even more special, we were one of five Llandudno hospitality businesses receiving recognition for this achievement.
The certificate praised “exceptional service, consistent excellence and outstanding traveller reviews” and noted that the award brings distinction to Llandudno and showcases the quality of hospitality within our town.
All very lovely.
But as we looked around the room, it became apparent that most of us had something else in common.
Hospitality people are generally quite happy getting up at 6am, carrying suitcases, making breakfasts, solving problems, changing beds, and working seven days a week.
Ask us to stand in front of a crowd while someone takes our picture, however, and suddenly we’re all searching for the nearest fire exit.
The reassuring thing was that we weren’t alone. Judging by the nervous smiles, shuffling feet and enthusiastic avoidance of the camera, most of the other award winners seemed to be thinking exactly the same thing:
“Can we have our certificate now and quietly get back to work?”
A huge thank you to TripAdvisor, to the Mayor and Council for the recognition, and most importantly to our wonderful guests whose reviews made it all possible.
The certificate now has pride of place on display.
Unlike its owners, who will be returning immediately to a life of avoiding attention and hiding behind the reception desk.
Until the next photo opportunity forces us out of retirement. 😅
